Social realism is a genre of film. From early on these films have raised controversy and political and social issues to the attention audiences. A prime example of early forms of social realism film was in 1905 when Lewin Fitzhamon and Cecil Milton Hepworth produced the film 'Rescued by Rover' it made clear the issues of child abduction (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlhNxHfyWTU).
Social Realism films use naturalistic settings and acting, and dull lighting to try and achieve the effect of it being more of a documentary of shocking events or lifestyles. When created effectively these films can contain images that are often astounding and unsettle the audience. It’s this gritty style that makes these films so successful. In recent Social Realism films issues such as young violence and drugs in films like kidulthood (Directed by: Menhaj Huda).
